A brief introduction from Stephen York

Words are my business and yours are very important. I have over 30 years' experience as a freelance proofreader working for many book and journal publishers, organizations, academics, authors and students in a wide variety of subjects. I am an Advanced Professional Member of CIEP (Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading), your assurance of quality.

My work

If you want to know what proofreading I have been doing recently, check out the Projects page.

The cost

I offer a proofreading service tailored to meet your budget and needs. For those on a tight budget I offer a budget proofreading service in return for fewer checks if you are happy with the structural accuracy of your writing.

My services are competitively priced and there are different payment options to settle my fees, depending on whether you are a large business or an individual, such as a student or academic.

If you have any queries about the proofreading process or my services, visit the Proofreading FAQs page or if that does not help, please contact me.

My blog

I publish blogs from time to time about proofreading and the English language that can be informative and useful. Why not pay a visit?

DK, Self-publishing author

When it comes to proofreading – the last line of defence for catching errors – publishers want a safe pair of hands, and Stephen York’s are the safest of all. Whether it’s applying a specified style guide, ferreting out inconsistencies, or catching an elusive orphaned citation, Stephen’s work is of an exceptional standard, and the reports he supplies with each completed job, specifying the standards applied and the outstanding author and publisher queries, are a model of clarity and thoroughness. No one hiring Stephen will be disappointed.

Jonathan Dore, Production Manager, University College London, Press

I've engaged Stephen as a proofreader on a multitude of projects over the years. He has worked on higher education and further education textbooks as well as online resources for me, and has always delivered on time to a very high standard. He pays meticulous attention to detail and raises valid author and editorial queries where necessary. I have no hesitation in recommending him to other publishers and organisations or individuals requiring proofreading services.

Fiona Freel, Production Manager, Print & Digital, City & Guilds Institute, London

Stephen worked as a proof reader for us on a major College of Social Science project involving the production of four high level research training modules for doctoral students studying at a distance. His meticulous attention to detail, care and conscientious approach was absolutely invaluable for us in ensuring that the materials were at the requisite standard of expression, clarity and accuracy – even more crucial because the students involved are scattered right across the globe and do not have face to face teaching on campus. I would recommend him without reservation to anyone seeking the highest level of proofreading skills

Professor Jo Brewis, Director of Postgraduate Research, College of Social Science, now Associate Dean - Learning and Teaching, University of Leicester
